social media buzzwords

If you’re in the social media world, there are definitely words you keep hearing over and over again. But do you really know what they mean? If not, Traffic Jams is here to help. Below are just 10 social media buzzwords you should probably know, along with their definition in simplest terms.

Shareability
Shareability refers to the extent of how easily shareable your information is. As a marketer, you strive for a high shareability factor on all of your social media posts, but it’s possible to get results through less shareable, but more highly-targeted content.

Call to action (CTA)
You probably already know this one, but may not know that it should be utilized in social media. A call to action is about enticing social media users into a pre-determined action, such as clicking on a link, following a profile, registering for a service, etc.

Snap
“Snap” is to Snapchat, as “tweet” is to Twitter. While the app Snapchat has been around for a couple years now, it’s starting to pick up as a way for brands to reach a huge millennial audience. Brands such as Amazon, Macy’s, Universal Pictures and McDonald’s have all run Snapchat campaigns. Additionally, media companies such as CNN, ESPN, and Cosmopolitan have taken advantages of the new ‘discover’ feature.

Blogosphere
The blogosphere refers to the world of bloggers. It’s made up of all blogs and their interconnections and often looked at as a community. Whether you’re trying to join the community or trying to target certain bloggers, this word may come up.

Meme
An Internet meme is pretty much anything that spreads from person to person through the Internet. It can take the form of a picture, video, image, hashtag, website or even just a word. Examples of memes include the trend of lying face down in public places (planking), Grumpy Cat, or making a Harlem Shake video. As a social media marketer, staying on top of the latest memes can definitely come in handy.

Viral
When something goes “viral”, it spreads throughout the Internet incredibly quickly, like a virus. Viral marketing is something that most brands dream of, but viral is impossible to predict, and therefore, impossible to plan for. But the more compelling the campaign is, the more likely it will spread.

Gamification
Gamification is the process of taking aspects of games and putting them into real life situations. Gamification is a great way to engage and interact with users in a fun and unique way. It can involve an actual game, a competition, a photo contest or much more.

Infographic
An infographic is a visual representation of information or data. Infographics are intended to present information quickly and clearly and have been growing in popularity due to easy-to-use, free online tools. They’re a great way to make data easier to absorb and easier to share.

Thought leader
A thought leader is a title given to an acclaimed authority in a particular field. It’s used to describe a person who is recognized by their peers for sharing original and innovative ideas. The term is often overused, but demonstrating the abilities of a thought leader in your industry can be incredibly advantageous.

Snackable content
Snackable content is bite-sized portions of content that can be easily consumed by the audience. Because people’s attention spans seem to be getting smaller, short-form content is the best solution. While a 1,000 word blog post may be a full meal, a few paragraphs is the perfect snack, and much easier to share on social media.
